Water Safety

As the weather gets warmer, many families will be spending more time outdoors near rivers, lakes, reservoirs, canals and the seaside. While these places can be enjoyable to visit, open water can be very dangerous, even for confident swimmers.

Cold water, strong currents, deep water and slippery banks can quickly turn a fun day out into a serious situation.

We encourage you to sit down as a family to talk together about staying safe around water and to remind children of these important safety messages:

  • Never swim alone.
  • Do not jump into water unless it is a safe, supervised area.
  • Cold water can affect your body very quickly.
  • Currents can be much stronger than they appear.
  • Always swim where lifeguards are present.
  • If you get into difficulty, float on your back, stay calm and call for help.

By understanding the risks and making safe choices, we can all help to prevent accidents and keep everyone safe around water.
